Why Not An Alliance Along Class Lines?
Lower and middle class whites are dying off in droves due to drugs, poverty, and depression. Ironically, it’s also the group that has the most white supremacists. I’ve never understood that.
Alliance Along Class Lines
Their conditions, both social and economic, are more or less the same as inner city black neighborhoods. Some of the oldest suburbs closest to city centers have become full blown drug economies as white flight continues but inevitably leaves some whites behind who cannot afford to move. Logically they would have more politically in common with blacks in the inner city. A full blown class warfare ideology to take root would make more sense in these neighborhoods than a racist one.
Government To The Rescue
The government cannot bring jobs in lost industries back, but the government can play a role in making a difference. Examples include vocational schools to get more marketable skills, drug rehabilitation programs for addicts, public transportation to get to jobs is important for neighborhoods where car ownership is no longer possible. These ideas are liberal progressive. If conservatives don’t like it, then they should step up their charity work if they want to show that charities can tackle these problems without the government. Up to this point, these efforts have provided a band-aid for the problem and have not reversed the trend. What’s certain is that these neighborhoods will probably not be able to reverse this negative trend on their own.
The White Ghetto
The government giving people a monthly check is derogatorily called “dependency”; however, there is truth in pointing out how the money doesn’t allow market forces to make people move to other more economically dynamic areas. The guaranteed money means they will be able to stay put but not get ahead. Worse, even if they manage to get capital through long shots like the lottery, pooling their resources, or through criminal means, they don’t have the skill to employ it productively similar to inner city black neighborhoods.
If you want to teach a man to fish, why should it matter if the teacher is public or private? If you are poor, why does it matter if you’re black or white? This is where the allegiance is that will cure racial strife. We should not subordinate race to mute our differences, we should elevate class to highlight our similarities.
