New Tampa Dance Company Full of Energy and Imagination
This weekend, I attended a groundbreaking event that made a mark in the Tampa Bay dance community. In the heart of Ybor, Tampa Modern Dance Company premiered its first show of its first season. The show was filled with energy, emotion, and dynamic movement that brought a rush of refreshing artistic expression into the theatre.
This company, founded and directed by Ashley Grimes, was much different than what the Bay is used to seeing. While Tampa is home to many other companies such as: Moving Current and Collective Soles Dance Collective, this show presented a much different interpretation on contemporary dance.
Modernizing Modern Dance
As described in the program, the word “modern” had a lot of influence on the movement presented before us tonight. Not only was modern technique a factor, but so was TMDC’s “modern” twist on the technique itself, as well as its implantation in our “modern” world. Pieces featured tonight were as abstract as works of art, and as literal as a “girls night” at the club. While still keeping an artistic twist to everything, TDMC delivered a performance that was relatable. As most can agree, dance can sometimes lose people in its complex medium of expression, and can sometimes deter people away from attending, making the exposure of the art that much more difficult. TDMC did a great job at engaging the audience with something they could appreciate wholeheartedly, but without stripping dance of its beautiful grace.
Grime’s mission was to bring the community together to rejoice in the blossoming of a new company, and she did just that. With a full house and standing ovation, TMDC reached the Tampa Bay area on multiple levels. Being only Tampa Modern Dance Company’s first season, it will be exciting to see where the company will go from here.
