Here Are The 2016 Naismith Hall of Fame Candidates
Allen Iverson, Yao Ming, Shaquille O’Neal, Tom Izzo and Sheryl Swoopes are some of the candidates for induction into the basketball hall of fame. Finalists are to be announced in February. A few points:
It’s not the NBA hall of fame. It’s the basketball hall of fame. AI, Izzo and Swoopes are in my opinion, no brainers.
We have Shaq as the ninth best player of all time so he’s obviously in. Here’s our recap:
Shaquille O’Neal was a league mvp and 4 time champion winning 3 finals mvps. All time, he ranks 7th in field goals, 4th in free throws attempted, 7th in offensive rebounds, 9th in defensive rebounds, 9th in blocks, 2nd in field goal percentage, 8th in points. Advanced statistics reveal he’s 3rd in PER and 2nd in effective field goal percentage. Most dominant player of the post Jordan era.
Yao Ming’s Hall of Fame Candidacy
Yao Ming’s path to the Hall of Fame became a little easier when it was revealed that the former Rockets center was nominated through the International committee, a category that requires only one round of balloting and will not put him in direct competition with most candidates from the NBA and ABA. I think Yao Ming gets in mainly for what he has done in promoting the game in his native country of China. He helped to make basketball a major sport there. Again, it’s the basketball hall of fame.
On the floor, Yao was 5-time all NBA. He averaged just shy of twenty points and ten rebounds (19 & 9). He made the playoffs 4 times but of course didn’t reach the finals playing during the height of the Lakers Kobe/Shaq run. He was definitely injury plagued, but when he was on the floor he was dominant. There were times when he was averaging 25 and 10. He was one of the last traditional centers in the NBA.
