Doin It w/Kwaisi France: 2015 Poker Champ Asher Conniff
We sat down with Asher Conniff, who after accidentally registering for a big-bucks Atlantic City poker tournament, walked away a winner with the top prize of $973,000, the windfall from the World Poker Tour’s $15,000 buy-in championship at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa. Ash was coming off the biggest score of his career — a $203,000 jackpot in the opening event of the Borgata’s Spring Poker Open on April 20th.
A few days later, he was set to play a $1,000 high-roller event on Borgata’s online poker room — only to mistakenly misclick. Conniff registered instead for a $1,600 satellite preliminary round of the $15,000 live main event that started the following day at the Borgata. He could not back out of the event as the casino said he was out of luck. He wound up winning the satellite and a seat into the prestigious championship.
Asher Conniff
We’ve had Asher on the show before, so it was good to contrast pre-millionaire Ash to post millionaire Ash. The verdict is there is no much difference. I should note that he emanates positivity and a “can do” attitude which is to be expected from someone who just became a millionaire by doing what they dream of doing.
Outside of the life changing events, Ash is still about Poker, hip-hop, and the Knicks, but life around him has certainly changed. He now has a financial advisor (his grandfather) who is helping him with his newfound fortune, and being able to financially help his friends and family who need it have helped him deal with the fame. He’s been all over television, the internet and social media, but seems to be taking it all in stride.
I think the most important thing to highlight from both an observer’s viewpoint that I’m sure Ash would appreciate is that this was not luck. We have seen this man work, and his time was coming.
