You’re A Baller?: Who Are You?
Who Are You
Ladies and gents, the weather’s getting warm which means it’s time for pickup basketball! It also means it’s time for this week’s Pickup PSA, pre-approved by Kwame and Adilio.
Today’s Pickup PSA is about who we should play hoops with, and it applies generally to those of us over the age of 25, and definitely those of us who are over 30. You should only play pickup ball with:
1) People you know, or within 2 degrees of separation. The more strangers in the game, the more arguing that happens, the less playing. We can’t spend all day on the court now. Time is precious!
2) Play basketball with people who have some knowledge on how to play. If he or she doesn’t know what’s happening, your team could get hurt, and so could you which leads to the most important point.
3) Play basketball with someone that has a job, or at least something to do the next morning. If they don’t have anything to do the next morning, they could care less about whether you do, and that’s where the “plays with reckless abandon guy/girl” is especially dangerous. You’ve gotta be at work at 9. If they just have to be up to watch Maury, that’s a competitive disadvantage far too great for you to overcome.
This bares repeating. To all of you who enjoy playing pickup hoops, I implore you not to be the “guy/girl who tries too hard in pickup games”. There are absolutely no trophies available. There are no scouts on White Plains Road looking for 30-35 year olds with NCAA eligibility. Chill. People have jobs to go to in the morning.
Editor’s Note: We could not agree more. In a city where you are always playing outdoors, please calm your happy asses down when you’re on the court. Thanks, Management
