We have alluded before to what the term currently means when we use it, but here is the history and proper definition. Thugs were an organized gang of professional assassins. Thugs travelled in groups across India for six hundred years. Although Thugs traced their origin to seven Muslim tribes, Hindus appear to have been associated with them at an early period.
The Thugs would join travelers and gain their confidence. This would allow them to then surprise and strangle their victims by pulling a handkerchief or noose tight around their necks. They would then rob their victims of valuables and bury their bodies. In the 1830s they were targeted for eradication and mainly destroyed by the British.
It seems originally, thugs were traveling grifters whom killed their victims and then robbed them. Today, Dictionary.com defines a thug as a a cruel or vicious ruffian, robber, or murderer, and Webster’s definition is not much different being a brutal ruffian or assassin. With the connotations pop culture have caused us to associate with thug, I think Urban Dictionary’s “a thug is someone who is going through struggles, has gone through struggles, and continues to live day by day with nothing for them. That person is a thug. and the life they are living is the thug life. A thug is NOT a gangster,” may be more appropriate.
NFL Franchise Relocation
In The Constitution and Bylaws of the National Football League, we find our answer in Sections 3. Section 3.4 states “Each member shall receive a Franchise Certificate of Membership signed by the Commissioner and Secretary of the League certifying that such member is a member of the League and holds a franchise from the League to operate a professional football club in a designated city. Such Franchise Certificate shall not be assignable nor transferable, except as provided in Section 3.5 hereof.” Kroenke would need to get Roger Gooddell to sign a certificate of membership for LA.
