Planned Parenthood Is Not Selling Fetal Parts For Profit
Hidden-camera footage released from years ago shows Planned Parenthood’s senior director of medical services, Dr. Deborah Nucatola, appearing to describe how the abortion provider distributes human body parts obtained from abortions. Planned Parenthood’s federal funding has been a contentious issue for years, with pro-life groups accusing them of illegally using funds allocated for “reproductive health care” for abortions. A Government Accountability Office report released earlier this year confirmed that hundreds of millions of dollars of federal funds went to Planned Parenthood and other groups who perform abortions, which they say they use for advocacy and other health services.
Fetus Parts For Profit
The harvesting, sale, and ultimate use of the tissue and body parts of aborted fetuses is governed by 42 U.S.C. 289g, regulating fetal research in general enacted in 1993 under President Clinton. In particular, 42 U.S.C. 289g-2(a) makes it unlawful for any person “to knowingly acquire, receive, or otherwise transfer any fetal tissue for valuable consideration if the transfer affects interstate commerce” (emphasis added). The law defines “valuable consideration” to exclude “reasonable payments associated with the transportation, implantation, processing, preservation, quality control, or storage of human fetal tissue.”
The law defines “valuable consideration” to exclude “reasonable payments associated with the transportation, implantation, processing, preservation, quality control, or storage of human fetal tissue.” In other words, Congress has prohibited the purchase or sale of fetal tissue for an amount of money (or other consideration) that exceeds the seller’s costs associated with transporting, implanting, processing, preserving, monitoring, and assuring quality control, or storage.
Look, fully formed babies are not being crushed by the millions. The vast majority of terminated pregnancies occur early on and when the fetus is miniscule. Planned Parenthood is not wholesaling body parts as a significant part of its practice as some are claiming. Late term abortions are rare and tragic events that the mother consents to only because her health is threatened or extreme deformity of the fetus was discovered.
I also recognize my own selfishness. If I was injured in a car wreck and on life support, I’ve not given permission in advance to allow anyone to have my heart, kidneys, liver, or any other vital organs they’d need to stay alive. I wonder how many critics of this practice by Planned Parenthood have indicated they would do such a thing in the event of their death? For opponents of this lawful practice of Planned Parenthood, I suggest they go about changing the law under which the practice is allowed. They would have to have the courage to make abortion an issue in the 2016 presidential election.
