Let Me Remind You Why You Love Coffee
For most, it’s become ritual; your daily cup of coffee. Some will say that it’s the perfect pick me up, and others (including myself) will swear by it’s magical powers to make them do anything and everything without a substantial amount of struggle. Let’s face it, coffee runs the world. Not girls, Beyonce. It’s coffee.
But at some point in our lives, we coffee lovers may run into folks that don’t understand our deep love and serious commitment to the bittersweet brew. Maybe they like tea more, maybe they’ve never tried good coffee, who knows. We ourselves may forget why we love this stuff so much when we question our conscious efforts to leave our place 30 minutes so that we can get our fix and not be late to work.
Luckily, for your future self or future run-ins with those that don’t understand our ways, I am here to remind you why coffee is the secret to our success.
- Coffee Helps You Wake Up
Unless you’re drinking decaf (who are you and how do you function), coffee contains the mesmerizing component called “caffeine.” This stimulant literally wakes you up by stimulating a bunch of different chemicals in your brain like dopamine and adrenaline, while also disrupting the binds of adenosine (the chemical that makes you tired) in your brain and ultimately replacing them. Therefore, instead of having these adenosine binds make you give into exhaustion, the caffeine in coffee takes their place and does quite the opposite. Simply put: coffee has caffeine. Caffeine = energy. Energy = not falling asleep when you sit down for 5 minutes.
- Coffee Tastes Like Love
A true coffee lover is also not dependent solely on the effects of coffee, but on the taste of it. That bitter, deep flavor is an acquired taste, but one that is quite distinct and rather impressionable. If morning had a taste, this would be it.
- Coffee Keeps You Regular
You can’t pretend that this isn’t a big factor behind your decision to opt for the medium instead of the small. I was recently referred to an video (thanks, Discovery News) that explained partially how “Coffee Keeps You Regular,” but I don’t think most of us that have chugged coffee too fast need science to prove why this happens. We’re just happy it does.
- Coffee Re-Teaches You How to Use Your Manners
For those that have tricked themselves into thinking they’re naturally a nice person, consider this: Remember that dopamine I mentioned earlier? Well, this chemical is actually responsible for making you happy. This means that coffee actually holds the power to make us nicer people, even when some of us weren’t designed to function before 10am, or tolerate the human race at any hour of the day. Coffee helps us spread the love when we would normally spit some attitude. Thank coffee for (still) being employed.
- Coffee Is Always There For You
Talk about the most consistent, stress-free relationship of your life. You can always depend on coffee for energy, alertness, and a kick in the butt to get things done. Unless someone accidentally hands you a cup of decaf (seriously, who are you people), coffee will always help you get you through your day with your desired dose of liquid encouragement.
- Coffee Helps You Make Friends
And of course, coffee brings friends together. Who doesn’t want to meet someone over coffee? That’s probably the most appealing date or coax into an uncomfortable recap on last night’s events. Coffee helps me deal with people, and people that love coffee are the kind of people I can relate to.
So, if you had forgotten why coffee is the best thing to happen to our mornings, late nights, all nighters, or days that we just “can’t even” with life, I hope you have just rekindled your ever-blooming love with your french press or local coffee spot.
Sip on, coffee fanatics. I’m sure another Starbucks just opened up on the next block about 20 minutes ago.
