Get Down or Lay Down: Beans Is Out

Rapper, actor, and conduit to the streets Beanie Sigel is moving from a prison to a halfway house. I was in college in Philadelphia as Beans began his rise to mainstream notoriety with Jay-Z, Dame Dash and Roc-A-Fella Records, so I feel a special affinity towards him. To me, Philly is Penn, Beans, The Eagles, cheesesteaks and general saltiness.

In the Bing For What?

The government named Dwight Grant, was moved from the Federal Correctional Institution Schuylkill to a Philadelphia-area residential reentry center on Aug. 14. Sigel, 40, had been serving a two-year sentence for tax evasion. He admitted failing to pay taxes for three years on more than $1 million of income, cheating the IRS out of nearly $350,000 in taxes from 2003 to 2005. Authorities also said he failed to pay taxes or file returns from 1999 through 2002. In total, according to prosecutors, he owed the IRS more than $700,000.

Where to Begin?

Look, I celebrate Beans’ whole catalogue, so I could regale you with songs, videos, movies and memories of all things Beans for thousands of words. In the interest of time and space. I will try to give you an idea of not only how nice Beans is, but how influential he was in the game. His first single off his debut albun “The Truth” was the song The Truth which happened to be Kanye West’s first song produced for Roc-A-Fella records.

The first single off of his second album The Reason, Mack Bitch, also embodies everything that Beans brought to the game with Philly on his back (I know there were the Roots). My apologies for the edited lyrics. That is really soft on Youtube’s part.

Finally, the best rap camp movie ever made, Roc-A-Fella’s State Property starring Beans and Dame Dash as rival drug dealers battling for turf in the Philly streets, is a masterpiece. To this day, I will swear to you that Beans was not “acting” the entire movie.

The five hardest rappers not named Big or Pac:

1) Beanie Sigel

2) Styles P

3) Hell Rell

4) Mac Dre

5) Lil Keke

Beans’ Mold Today:

Welcome home Beans!
